GPS FOR MARINERS
GPS for Mariners is a
three hour modern learning experience designed to help the recreational boater
navigate with the assistance of the federal Global Positioning System (GPS).
The program was recently introduced to the boating public through an exciting
synergy between author Robert Sweet, his publisher, and the United States Coast
Guard Auxiliary.
Those who attend GPS for
Mariners receive Robert Sweet’s book, some terrific PowerPoint support
materials, and extensive hands-on instruction and practice with using a
hand-held GPS receiver. Participants learn the various ways to enter waypoints,
plan routes, and use a GPS receiver to navigate a planned course. Program
participants who own a hand-held GPS receiver are encouraged to bring their GPS
receiver to the session. Hand-held GPS receivers are also available for use
by participants who do not bring a GPS receiver.
This program is held on Saturdays (1 session -- 3 hours). The cost is $30, but
that cost is reduced for additional family members who share the same textbook.

Anyone who completes GPS for
Mariners should consider enrolling in the flotilla’s Advanced Coastal
Navigation program. That program offers comprehensive training in all aspects
of coastal piloting and navigation.
